Alaska is home to 41 of the worlds approximately 1,500 active volcanoes. So it isn't surprising when one or more of them wake up and holds our attention.
After continued increased seismic activity and steam plumes, Augustine Volcano, located 75 miles West of Homer in Cook Inlet, erupted on January 11, 2006. Cleveland Volcano, in the Western Aleutian Islands erupted February 6, 2006.

I have only been in Alaska a couple of years. I always found volcanoes fascinating, but I never studied them much beyond the casual read. Now that I live near them, my interest has certainly grown. This is natural considering I live within the reach of their effects.
Those effects are limited to ash fall in the air. Alaska's volcanoes have very little impact beyond ash events and aviation concerns. Danger from lava flow is non-existant.

Volcanic ash can cause many problems and is a serious concern. It can impact people with respiratory distress. It can ruin electronics, including those used in airplanes & cause aviation engine failure. It plays havoc on transportation in general causing airlines to cancel or divert flights; and it can ruin automobile engines and can make roads slick as ice causing many accidents.

But mostly, volcanoes just add to the fascination of life in Alaska. That life is never boring. Daily earthquakes, occasional volcanoes, Grizzly Bears, & extreme weather; constant reminders that we are but a very small part of nature & our surroundings.
Hope you enjoy exploring Alaska's volcanoes as much as I do.
